AdLab Greets First Guest Speaker of Fall 2023 - Jay Donohue

On October 31, AdLab hosted the first guest speaker of this semester. This time we invited Jay Donohue, a digital creative director who worked with Chris Lee, one of the faculty advisors of AdLab. Jay and Professor Lee gave a great talk to the AdLabbers about career development.

Jay Donohue, the guest speaker

Jay introduced the pros and cons of two different kinds of people, generalists and specialists. He encouraged students to develop their own T-shape by gaining broad experience across different creative positions and choosing an area to develop in depth. “When you do, go an inch wide and a mile deep”, said Jay.

In the end, Jay explained the two types of people that will own the future: Generalizing-Specialists and Specializing-Generalists. Generalizing-Specialists are specialists who are excellent at one area but able to perform a wider variety of tasks. Specializing-Generalists are multitasking generalists who acquire greater proficiency in specific skills.

During the speech, AdLabbers gained valuable perspectives on balancing their future career paths between generalization and specialization. Thank you Jay for sharing a meaningful lesson with us.
